How often should I recalculate my calorie needs?

Your calorie needs can change over time with shifts in weight, muscle mass, activity level, age, health status, and even how your body adapts to calorie intake.

However, you may consider recalculating your calorie intake when you notice changes such as:

  • A change in bodyweight or body composition
  • A change in activity level
  • A change in health status or medications
  • Feeling unusually fatigued, continuous hungry, mood changes or noticing other signs that your current needs aren’t being met

It’s important to remember that calorie calculators provide estimates. They can offer a general starting point, but do not account for your unique metabolic changes, especially as they change over time. Food type and overall lifestyle habits also play a role in long-term health.

If you’re unsure if your calorie intake is appropriate, it is best to check in with a licensed healthcare practitioner, like a registered dietitian, for personalized guidance.

Is calorie counting required to reach my health goals?

Not necessarily. While tracking calories can help increase awareness of your eating habits, it isn’t required for most people to achieve better health or a sustainable weight. In many cases, focusing on food type and quality, balanced meals, and mindful eating habits can lead to longer-lasting results.

Some people may find calorie tracking helpful at first to understand portion sizes and patterns in their diet.

Who shouldn’t rely on a calorie calculator alone?

Calorie calculators provide estimates and should not be relied on alone. It does not account for individual differences in metabolism, body composition, or how the body adapts to changes in calorie intake over time. It’s best to check in with a licensed healthcare practitioner for personalized guidance.

What is the difference between calorie deficit and TDEE?

Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is the estimated number of calories your body uses each day through basic bodily functions (breathing, digestion, etc.) and physical activity.

A calorie deficit happens when you consume fewer calories than your TDEE. In theory, this gap leads your body to use stored energy to make up the difference.

Both of these concepts are approximations. TDEE calculations are based on population averages and don’t capture individual factors or shifts in metabolism, activity, and health. Because of this, calorie deficits and TDEE should be used as general guides.

How many calories do I need to maintain my weight and health?

The number of calories you need to maintain your weight depends on several factors, including:

  • Age, sex, height
  • Muscle mass
  • Activity level
  • Overall health

Since these factors and your body’s response to them can change over time, there isn’t a single number that applies to everyone. For many, it can be more helpful to keep track of eating patterns or signals like energy levels.

A healthcare practitioner, such as a registered dietitian, can help guide you through your caloric needs based on your health history and goals.

Does age affect my recommended calorie intake?

Yes, age can have a significant impact on your calorie needs. As people get older, changes in body composition, hormone levels, and activity patterns can affect the amount of energy the body uses at rest. This means that adults sometimes require fewer calories over time even if their weight and activity level stay the same, but often need to consume more protein in their diet.

These changes can vary widely between individuals since genetics, body composition, health conditions, and lifestyle habits can all influence how metabolism shifts with age. If you’re unsure how age-related changes may be affecting your calorie needs, it can be helpful to consult a licensed healthcare practitioner for guidance such as a registered dietitian.

Do I need to count every calorie?

Not necessarily. Calorie tracking can help some people understand portion sizes and identify patterns in their diet, but only focusing on calorie counting can become counterproductive. The types of food you eat — such as balanced meals, adequate protein, and limiting highly processed foods — often matter as much as calorie intake.

How big should my calorie deficit be?

There is no single “ideal” calorie deficit that works for everyone. Maintaining deficits for a long time or maintaining a large deficit can increase the risk of muscle loss, nutrient deficiencies, and symptoms like low energy, irritability, or digestive issues. When the body is in a calorie deficit, it naturally reacts to protect itself and slow down further weight loss. Prolonged or excessive calorie restriction may also lead to rebound overeating or weight cycling. It may also result in alterations of multiple organ systems and physiological functions such as:

  • Lower metabolic rate
  • Impaired reproductive function
  • Effects on bone and muscle health
  • Increased hunger
  • Altered appetite-regulating hormones
  • Reduced physical activity

Additionally, calorie deficits are rarely sustainable long-term and only give you a general idea of your calorie needs. It’s often more helpful to focus on overall eating patterns and food quality/choices, such as limiting processed foods and eating adequate protein/fiber, rather than a specific number of calories, in order  to support your long-term health goals.

How does a calorie deficit diet work?

A calorie deficit diet works by creating a gap between the energy you consume and the energy your body uses. When your body doesn’t get enough energy from food, it draws on stored energy to make up the difference. Over time, this can lead to weight loss.

Despite the common belief that weight loss is simply “calories in vs. calories out,” the process is far more complex. Many factors influence weight loss, including:

  • Genetics and hormones
  • Sleep quality
  • Stress levels
  • Health conditions and medications
  • Types of foods available
  • Body composition, and more.

What’s the difference between goal weight vs. best weight?

A goal weight is a target number that a person aims to reach. On the other hand, best weight is the weight that a person can achieve and maintain while living their healthiest life. Weight management is complex because of the many factors, including biological and lifestyle factors, that influence our body size and energy needs. This is why attaining a goal weight can frequently be unrealistic. Often, our body naturally determines the weight it is healthiest at based on these factors, i.e. genetics, hormones, metabolism, sleep, health conditions, lifestyle and more. Focusing on reaching your best weight shifts the emphasis toward building sustainable habits that prioritize long-term health and overall wellbeing.

Which biomarkers are included in the Felix Longevity test?

At Felix, we test 35+ essential biomarkers to monitor your heart, kidney, and liver health, vitamin and nutrient balance, inflammation and more. See all markers here.

As part of your longevity results, you’ll also receive your biological age alongside your blood biomarker lab results. We use Levine’s Phenotypic Age to calculate this, which is a measure of biological age blood markers that were developed by Dr. Morgan Levine and their colleagues.

To determine your biological age, we combine 9 common clinical biomarkers, including:

  • Albumin
  • Creatinine
  • Glucose
  • C-reactive proteins
  • Several other blood cell measurements

Using a mathematical model, this information is combined along with your actual age to calculate your biological age. We also test a range of longevity biomarkers for your heart, kidney, and liver health, as well as vitamin and nutrient balances.

Together, all this information gives your practitioner the information they need to provide you with a preventative health assessment, as well as recommendations on lifestyle changes that can help you live longer and healthier.

What are some common signs my calorie deficit might be too big?

Calorie deficits can support weight loss, but a deficit that’s too large can be unsafe. When you cut calories too drastically, your body may slow its metabolism and trigger changes, such as fatigue and increased hunger, to protect itself from what it perceives as starvation.Common signs that your calorie deficit might be too big include:

  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Continuous hunger
  • Mood changes
  • Skin, hair, or nail problems
  • Digestive issues
  • Feeling cold

These are signals that your body isn’t getting the calories or nutrients that it needs to function properly. Most weight loss can lead to muscle loss, but overly restrictive caloric diets can also lead to a significant increase in muscle loss and nutrient deficiencies that may impair overall health and future wellbeing. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please chat with your healthcare practitioner.

Is a calorie deficit the only way to lose weight?

Not exactly. Weight regulation is much more complex than “calories in, calories out.” There are many other things like hormones, genetics, sleep, stress, activity levels, health conditions, and the types of food consumed that play a major role in how your body manages energy and weight.

It’s also important to recognize that focusing on achieving your best weight, the weight that represents what is most healthy and sustainable for your body, rather than goal weight encourages long-term health and realistic lifestyle changes that support overall wellbeing.

Is a calorie deficit diet safe for everyone?

Not necessarily. While a calorie deficit can lead to weight loss for some people, this is mostly in the short-term. For many people it isn’t sustainable in the long-term and for many, these approaches can slow metabolism, increase hunger, and contribute to an unhealthy relationship with food. Additionally it may not be healthy for some people, like those with certain medical conditions and pregnant patients. Many breastfeeding, elderly patients and children should also be cautious about calorie deficits.

Repeated cycles of dieting and regaining weight, also known as weight cycling or “yo-yo dieting,” are often worse for overall health. Everyone’s calorie needs and body responses are different, and what works short term may not support long-term wellbeing and can alter your body’s response to calorie intake and diets in the future.

For personalized guidance on weight management, it’s best to consult a registered dietitian or healthcare practitioner rather than relying on calorie targets alone.

What is a caloric deficit?

A calorie deficit happens when your body uses more calories than you consume. Over time, this often leads to weight loss since the body draws on stored energy to make up the difference.

However, your recommended calorie intake is highly individual and depends on many factors such as body composition, age, sex, activity level, health status, and genetics. Additionally, long-term, your body reacts to the calorie restriction and so that can also affect body size and weight loss over time. As a result, calorie deficit calculators can provide rough estimates, but they’re not perfectly accurate and should not be relied on as exact measurements.

Are calorie calculators accurate?

No, calorie calculators provide rough estimates. They are based on population averages and don’t account for all the individual factors that influence weight, metabolism and your health. The body also constantly adapts to changes in calorie intake and energy output, so no calculator can perfectly predict your actual calorie needs.

How does the calculator figure out my daily calorie needs?

The calculator uses standardized equations to estimate your resting energy expenditure (the calories your body burns at rest) and adjusts that number based on your activity level to estimate your total daily energy needs.

The same approach is used to understand how to calculate calorie deficit, by comparing the calories you consume to the energy your body uses.

What does a calorie deficit calculator do?

A calorie deficit calculator provides an estimate of how many calories your body may need each day to maintain, lose, or gain weight based on details like age, height, weight, sex, and activity level. While it can be a helpful tool to understand how different factors influence your calorie needs, focusing on sustainable lifestyle habits is more important for long-term health.

Is it safe to order Viagra Oral Strips online?

Yes, it’s safe to order Viagra Oral Strips online in Canada through Felix.

We ensure our treatments are authorized for sale by Health Canada, and we only provide treatments to patients that have secured a prescription from a licensed healthcare practitioner.

Felix is also happy to provide online assessments with patients across Canada to help determine if PrViagra ODF oral strips could be a beneficial treatment option for you.

Is PrViagra ODF the same as the oral strips?

PrViagra ODF is the brand name of the oral strip medication that we provide to our eligible patients in Canada.

For all intents and purposes, you could refer to these treatments as either PrViagra ODF or simply oral strips and it would be accurate.

These are an alternative to traditional Viagra medication pills, which are meant to be swallowed whole rather than dissolved within your mouth.

What is the difference between orodispersible vs sublingual medication?

Orodispersible tablets or strips look like regular medications that you would swallow, but they’re designed to disintegrate in your mouth once they make contact with your saliva. This makes them extremely easy to swallow.

Alternatively, sublingual medications are designed to be specifically kept under your tongue until they dissolve, rather than just ‘in your mouth’ like orodispersible tablets.

PrViagra ODF oral strips are an orodispersible form of medication, so they’re extremely easy to use; even if you normally have difficulty taking pills.

Factors that can affect your health and body size Copy

Several factors can influence your body size and health beyond just your BMI. These factors are why BMI should always be interpreted as part of a broader health assessment.

Genetics: Your genes can affect how and where your body stores fat.

Lifestyle: Diet, physical activity, sleep and stress all play a role.

Certain health conditions or medications: Medical conditions and some medications can impact weight and stored fat.

Age and sex: Body composition often changes over time and can vary between men and women.

Race and ethnicity: Research shows that BMI doesn’t reflect body composition the same way across all groups. Factors like muscle mass, fat distribution and metabolic conditions can differ based on ethnicity. Cultural perceptions of weight and access to care may also shape someone’s experience with weight management.

BMI is a helpful screening tool, but it should always be interpreted as part of a broader health assessment—one that accounts for who you are as a whole person.

How to calculate your BMI

BMI is a simple calculation that uses your height and weight to estimate your body fat.  Remember that it is an estimate, it is not accurate in some cases and it does not diagnose health.

To calculate it in metric units, divide your weight in kilograms (kg) by your height in meters (m) squared.

For example, if you weigh 70 kg and are 1.75 m tall: 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9

To calculate it in imperial units, divide your weight in pounds (lbs) by your height in inches (in) squared, and multiply the result by 703.

For example, if you weigh 154 lbs and are 5’9" (69 inches) tall:154 ÷ (69 × 69) × 703 = 22.7

But, no need to do the math yourself. Our calculator gives you a result in seconds.

What your BMI result means

Your BMI category offers a general idea of how your weight may relate to your risk for certain health conditions.

  • Underweight: Possible increased risk for nutritional deficiencies, weakened immunity and osteoporosis.
  • Healthy weight: Generally associated with lower risk for most weight-related health conditions.
  • Overweight: May increase risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other metabolic conditions.
  • Obesity: Higher likelihood of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and certain cancers.
BMI ranges: underweight, healthy, overweight, obesity
  • Underweight: BMI below 18.5
  • Healthy weight: BMI 18.5–24.9
  • Overweight: BMI 25–29.9
  • Obesity: BMI 30 and above

Please note that these ranges help assess potential health risks, but they don’t tell the whole story. Speaking with a healthcare provider is always recommended.

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation that uses your height and weight to estimate your body fat. It can help categorize weight as underweight, healthy weight, overweight, or obesity. While it’s a useful screening tool, BMI doesn’t account for muscle mass, bone density, fat distribution or individual health differences. It’s designed for adults and is only one piece of your overall health picture.

When should I talk to a healthcare practitioner about postmenopause?

If your symptoms are affecting your daily life or you're unsure how to manage new changes, it’s a good idea to reach out. Felix healthcare practitioners are trained in menopause care and can help you understand your options and build a plan that fits your needs.

Is postmenopause treatment safe for me?

Treatment plans are tailored to your health history, symptoms and goals. For most healthy people, the benefits of managing postmenopause symptoms outweigh potential risks. At Felix, our healthcare practitioners will walk you through your options and help you decide what feels right for you.

What lifestyle changes help manage postmenopause symptoms?

Small, steady changes can make a big difference. Staying active, eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep and finding ways to manage stress can all help ease symptoms and support your overall health. Limiting alcohol and caffeine as well as quitting smoking are big ones.

When does postmenopause start?

Postmenopause begins after you’ve gone 12 months without a period. For most people, this happens around age 51, but it can vary. Once you reach postmenopause, you stay in this stage for the rest of your life.

When should I talk to a doctor about early menopause?

If you’re under 45 and are noticing menopause symptoms, you may want to consider chatting with a healthcare practitioner. Felix’s menopause-trained healthcare practitioners can confirm what’s going on and discuss timely, evidence-based options.

Is early menopause treatment safe for me?

We use only proven, Health Canada-authorised medications to treat menopause symptoms. Like any medication, there are potential risks, but our menopause-trained clinicians review your health history, explain benefits and trade-offs, and recommend a plan that suits your symptoms and lifestyle. Treatment plans at Felix are always personalized.

Do I require lab testing or blood work for early menopause symptom treatment?

At Felix, healthcare practitioners may recommend further evaluation and labs to exclude other potential causes of your symptoms. Diagnosis of early menopause is mainly clinical, meaning that treatment is prescribed based on your symptoms rather than lab tests or blood work. Your practitioner will decide if tests add value.

What is the difference between early menopause and menopause?

Timing. Natural menopause averages age 51. Early menopause happens between 40–45; premature menopause occurs before 40. Earlier estrogen loss raises long-term health risks, making timely treatment important.

What are the first signs of early menopause?

Irregular or skipped periods, night sweats, hot flashes, mood changes and brain fog are common. Book an assessment if these symptoms last three months and you’re under 45.

Is metabolic testing covered by insurance in Canada?

Many tests for metabolic health are covered by insurance. However, whether yours will be covered will depend on a number of factors that you’ll need to keep in mind, such as:

  • The province in which you live
  • The type of diabetes testing that your practitioner is suggesting
  • Whether you meet the eligibility criteria to have these tests covered
  • The reason why these tests are being suggested for you
  • Your practitioner’s assessment of medical necessity

If you have more questions about metabolic health testing at Felix, feel free to reach out to us with your questions through the chat bubble in the bottom right corner of our Contact Us page.

Our support team is always happy to provide you with direction and guidance. This way, you can continue taking back control of your health and quality of life, so you can get back to living life on your terms - the way it should be.

How can I improve my metabolic health?

Healthy living is a great way to improve your metabolic health, without the need for medications or supplements. This means eating a well-balanced diet that’s full of vitamins, minerals, and healthy proteins, as well as getting regular exercise to keep your muscles and bones strong.

In addition to this, periodic metabolic testing is a great way to catch issues as they begin to arise, before they can cause any major problems to your health.

Managing stress is another great way to help improve your metabolic health, since stress can impact a number of different parts of our daily lives. Prioritizing sleep and making sure you get enough each night is another way to help keep yourself metabolically healthy.

If you’re a smoker, quitting smoking is another way to help improve your metabolic health, as not only does it impact your appetite, but it is harmful to multiple parts of your body.

Can metabolic testing detect diabetes or other conditions?

Metabolic testing could be the first step towards receiving a diabetes diagnosis, as well as identifying and addressing other conditions, such as kidney issues, thyroid irregularities, cholesterol problems, and with CMP blood tests, liver enzyme concerns.

While it will be up to your healthcare team to provide a diagnosis for any of the conditions that you may be experiencing, a basic metabolic panel test could be the best way to begin identifying major issues with your metabolic health, so they can be addressed and managed.

How do I read my metabolic health test results?

There’s no reason for you to need to be able to read your test results directly, since the laboratory that processes them will send the results of your testing directly back to your practitioner at Felix.

When you meet with them to discuss your results, they’ll be able to walk you through what all the results in your metabolic testing mean, as well as how you can begin to counteract any results that could be negatively impacting your metabolic health.

Together with one of our friendly practitioners, you can create a plan to get yourself back to a healthy metabolism, as well as address any other concerns that may be raised about your overall health through your metabolic testing.

How long does it take to get my test results?

How long it takes for your metabolic panel blood test results to come back will partially be determined by how busy the local facility is that will be processing your blood tests.

This can take anywhere from several hours to a few weeks, but in most cases, the results are typically available for your practitioner to review in 2-3 business days. They will reach out to you to schedule a follow-up assessment, once your results have been received.

Do I need to fast before a metabolic panel blood test?

Yes, you’ll typically be requested to fast for at least 8 hours before your full panel blood test in Canada, because then the test can accurately determine your kidney function, as well as your blood sugar and triglyceride levels.

This means no food or drink during this period of time, except for water.

How do I prepare for a metabolic health test?

It’s really simple to set yourself up for success when you’re doing at-home metabolic testing. The best way to start is to pick somewhere clean and easy-to-access to have the test done, like your living room. Find somewhere really comfortable to sit, where you know you can feel at ease.

Make sure that you have a glass of water ready to drink while the practitioner is setting up, in case you get thirsty. You may also want to have a glass of juice ready for yourself after the BMP blood test is completed.

The entire process from the time they arrive, until the time that they leave should only take between 10-15 minutes, and then you can continue on with your regular daily schedule.

How is metabolic testing done at Felix?

The first step towards requesting metabolic testing through Felix is to let us know that you’d like to have this type of testing done. You can arrange an appointment to have a BMP blood test through our secure online platform.

Once we’ve received your assessment, your practitioner will discuss the metabolic testing process with you, as well as some tips on how to improve your metabolic health through positive lifestyle changes while you wait for your results.

Felix will arrange for the appointment with one of LifeLabs technicians, who will come to your home (at your chosen time) to administer the blood test in a safe, effective way. You will receive an email to confirm the appointment once it’s been booked, as well as call you 24 hours before the scheduled time to remind you about your upcoming BMP blood test appointment.

You also have the option to visit a lab to have the testing completed, depending on your preferences and schedule. The results can still be sent back to your practitioner at Felix for review and discussion after your metabolic health test results have been processed.

SIDE NOTE: At this time, at-home metabolic health testing is only available in Ontario.

What are the symptoms of poor metabolic health?

If you’re already living with unhealthy metabolic levels, you may begin showing symptoms of poor metabolic health, which can impact your ability to enjoy life. Some of these potential symptoms of poor metabolic health include:

  • Constant urination
  • More frequent infections
  • Blurred vision
  • Sudden changes in your weight (increase or decrease)
  • Unusual levels of thirst
  • Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
  • Cuts and bruises heal slower than normal
  • Excessive fatigue or exhaustion
  • Numbness in your hands or feet

Should you begin showing any symptoms of poor metabolic health, you should be sure to let your practitioner know right away, so that they can arrange for metabolic testing for you, and you can determine which areas of your metabolic health could be causing your symptoms.

How do I know if I have good metabolic health?

You may begin showing signs or symptoms of poor metabolic health before you receive a diagnosis for it, but that won’t always be the case. Certain areas that make up metabolic health may not necessarily show any symptoms of poor metabolic health, even though it is.

For example, cholesterol is often considered a silent condition, because patients with high cholesterol may not realize they do without metabolic testing, until a major health issue arises due to their cholesterol levels.

The best way to know for sure if you’re metabolically healthy is to have metabolic testing done periodically; especially as you get older or if you begin to show any symptoms of poor metabolic health.

What is the difference between a basic and comprehensive metabolic panel?

In some cases, a basic metabolic panel test may refer to testing that’s done to check one specific area on the metabolic spectrum of health (i.e., just blood sugars, just thyroid function), or only a portion of all the potential areas to check.

On the other hand, a comprehensive metabolic panel blood test (or CMP blood test) refers to testing that covers all of these areas needed to maintain a healthy metabolism, as well as assesses your liver function.

What does a metabolic panel test for?

There are a handful of different things that a basic metabolic panel will test for, all of which play a role in staying metabolically healthy. The things metabolic testing checks for includes:

  • Thyroid levels
  • Blood sugar levels
  • Cholesterol levels
  • Kidney function
  • Liver function
Why is metabolic testing important?

Metabolic health testing is incredibly important, since it offers you a uniquely comprehensive snapshot of all the key functions your body is performing related to how your body produces and uses energy.

It’s a lot more than just a single reading like checking cholesterol or blood sugar, and instead, offers practitioners a cluster of interconnected markers that allow them to gauge how efficiently these vital elements are functioning.

There are a number of reasons why this is important, including:

  • Early Detection: Metabolic health testing can help you identify smaller metabolic dysfunctions (i.e., increased insulin resistance, prediabetes, etc.), before they develop into chronic issues like heart disease or type 2 diabetes.
  • Health Risk Assessments: Metabolic health markers help practitioners quantify your risks for certain conditions to appear (i.e., Metabolic Syndrome), which can increase your risks of things like diabetes or cardiovascular issues occurring.
  • Identifying Necessary Interventions: In addition to providing foresight into potential issues in the future, metabolic health testing provides actionable insights that you can use to improve your lifestyle habits (i.e., diet, exercise, etc.), in order to improve your overall health.
What is metabolic health?

Metabolic health refers to a number of areas that impact your body’s ability to process and use the energy that you take in effectively.

Someone with a healthy metabolism will be at lower risk for issues like diabetes, as well as kidney, liver, cholesterol, and thyroid issues than someone with unhealthy metabolic levels.

Can Felix help me diagnose or access support for PMDD?

Yes. With Felix, you can connect with a licensed healthcare practitioner to talk about what you’re experiencing, get a proper diagnosis and build a personalized plan that supports your needs and goals. You don’t have to navigate PMDD alone — we’re here to help you understand your symptoms, explore your options and make adjustments along the way.

I have bad PMS symptoms all of a sudden — could this be PMDD?

If your PMS symptoms have become more severe or disruptive, it could be a sign of PMDD. PMDD symptoms tend to be more intense and often interfere with daily life. Tracking your symptoms and talking to a healthcare practitioner can help figure out what’s going on.

Can PMDD be mistaken for severe depression, bipolar disorder, or other mental health issues?

Yes. PMDD can share overlapping symptoms with depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder, which can make diagnosis more challenging. A thorough evaluation that includes tracking symptoms across menstrual cycles is important to tell these conditions apart.

Can PMDD get worse with age?

PMDD symptoms can change over time. Some people notice that symptoms become more intense in their late 30s and 40s as they approach perimenopause, when hormone levels start to fluctuate more.

When are PMDD symptoms generally the worst?

Symptoms are usually at their peak during the week before your period starts. Once menstruation begins, symptoms typically lessen or go away within a few days.

How long do PMDD symptoms generally last each month?

PMDD symptoms usually start one to two weeks before your period (during the luteal phase) and improve within a few days after your period begins. For many, this means symptoms last about 1–2 weeks each cycle.

Is there a test for PMDD?

There isn’t a single test to diagnose PMDD. Instead, healthcare practitioners look at your symptoms and how they relate to your menstrual cycle over time. You may be asked to track your symptoms daily for at least two menstrual cycles to help confirm the pattern.

When should I talk to a doctor about perimenopause?

If you believe that you’re starting to show signs of perimenopause beginning, it can be a good idea to talk to a practitioner as soon as is convenient for you.

The earlier you seek guidance from a healthcare professional, the sooner you can start finding methods that work for managing perimenopause symptoms for you.

Not everything will work for everyone, which is why Felix specializes in custom-tailored treatment plans that are designed for each individual. This way, we can help you take back control of your health sooner, so you can get back to living life on your terms - the way it should be.

What lifestyle changes help manage perimenopause symptoms?

There are a number of healthy lifestyle changes that may not only benefit your transition into menopause, but also may help you improve your overall health, such as:

  • Quitting smoking
  • Reducing alcohol intake
  • Reducing or avoiding caffeine
  • Getting plenty of sleep
  • Increasing your calcium intake
  • Maintaining a healthy body weight
  • Reducing stress or anxiety triggers

You may also want to consider taking a multivitamin as a treatment for perimenopause; although this should be done with the oversight of your practitioner to ensure that you’re taking in the vitamins that suit your body and lifestyle for overall well-being.

Felix 101
What is Felix?

Felix is Canada’s first truly integrated healthcare platform. We provide on-demand treatment for everyday health needs like weight loss, mental health, sexual health, and more. Founded in 2019, our digital-first approach to healthcare includes everything from diagnosis to prescription — all accessible from the comfort of home.

Who can use Felix?

Anyone who is 18 years or older older (16 or older for acne and birth control prescriptions), and is located in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan or Ontario. We cannot ship treatments outside of these provinces at this time.

Can I be accurately assessed remotely?

Absolutely. Our online assessments have been designed to ask all the necessary questions required for diagnosis. We've worked with specialists to create an assessment process that can provide sufficient information for the healthcare practitioner to determine whether or not you are eligible for a prescription and craft an appropriate treatment plan.

Does Felix replace my doctor?

No. Felix provides a faster, hassle-free way for you to get a treatment plan for certain conditions, but our service does not replace your primary care provider. For matters that extend beyond obtaining a lifestyle treatment safely and easily, we encourage you to consult your primary health practitioner in person — whether for checkups, personal health concerns, or to inform them about your current treatments or treatment plans.

It's an emergency. What do I do?

Call 911 or proceed to your nearest emergency room immediately. Felix is not intended for medical emergencies. Once the emergency has been addressed or resolved, contact your prescribing practitioner to inform them of your experience as this may impact your current treatment plan.

Online visits
How does the visit work?

After creating an account, you will complete a medical assessment for evaluation by one of the Felix healthcare practitioners.

During your assessment, you will have the opportunity to send your practitioner questions via secure messaging.

In most cases, practitioners will complete your assessment with secure messaging alone but sometimes they may determine you require an audio or video visit and/or further diagnostic testing to help determine the best treatment plan for you.

If your practitioner has determined a prescription treatment is appropriate, they will approve your visit and write you a prescription. Our pharmacy will then ship your prescription to your home.

You’ll be able to message your healthcare practitioner if you have questions or want to make changes to your treatment at any time.

How quickly will a healthcare practitioner review my online visit?

You can expect to receive a response from a healthcare practitioner within 24 hours of submission. If you’ve been waiting longer than this, please reach out to our Patient Support team through the chat bubble in the bottom right corner of your account or our Contact Us page.

Do I need to complete my online visit at a scheduled time?

No. We use an asynchronous telemedicine model so you can complete your online visit in your own time and we save your progress so you can come back later to finish it.

If you are completing a visit in the mental health or weight loss categories, your healthcare practitioner may require a phone or video call to discuss your medical profile further during the assessment process.

I completed my online visit. Now what?

Great, you’ve already taken the first step! Next, a healthcare practitioner will review your assessment and if necessary, will send you a link to book an online audio or video appointment with them. This appointment will help them determine the best treatment plan for you. If your healthcare practitioner thinks you will benefit from an available medication, they will write you a prescription. Our pharmacy can ship your medication to your home if you would like your medication dispensed through the Felix Pharmacy network.

Can I just get the treatment and skip the online visit?

No. A visit with a licensed healthcare practitioner is required for all treatments currently provided through Felix’s service.

Does the online visit require a phone or video appointment?

Most assessments do not require a phone or video conversation. Once a prescriber has reviewed the info in your assessment they will respond to you via secure instant messages that you can access within your Felix account.

If you are completing a visit in the mental health or weight loss categories, your healthcare practitioner may require a phone or video call to discuss your medical profile further during the assessment process.

Shipping
Is your packaging discreet?

Absolutely. All Felix shipments arrive in a nondescript blister package so you can have your medication shipped wherever makes sense for you as long as there is someone there to sign for it.

How much does it cost for shipping my medication?

There is currently no cost to have your medication sent to you from our Felix Pharmacy network.

What do I do if my package was returned to Felix?

We’ll contact you via email if your package is returned to us!

For most treatments, your meds will be destroyed 1 month after your fill date should you fail to respond to Felix Customer Support or contact the partner pharmacy. Temperature controlled medications may have a reduced reshipment eligibility window due to their limited shelf life, in accordance with product guidelines. All reshipments are at the discretion of a pharmacist's professional judgment.

If you require assistance with a returned package, please reach out to our Patient Support team through the chat bubble in the bottom right corner of your account or our Contact Us page.

How many days do I have to notify you of an undelivered or lost package, or damaged medication?

You have 14 days from the date your tracking link was sent to notify us of an undelivered or lost package, or damaged medication.

I received an email with a tracking number but it doesn't seem to be working!

Your tracking number will be activated when the courier picks up your shipment from the pharmacy. Please allow until 6 pm the following business day, and you should then be able to see the status of your package. If the tracking number still isn’t working, please reach out to our Patient Support team through the chat bubble in the bottom right corner of your account or our Contact Us page and we’ll look into it.

How long will it take to get my medication?

Not long. After completing your assessment, a practitioner will generally respond within 24 hours, and often much sooner.

The pharmacy will process and fill your prescription within 2-3 business days of your prescription approval date if there is nothing blocking them from doing so.

All packages are shipped via Express Post, which usually takes 2-3 business days. You will receive an email with your tracking number once your treatment has been shipped.

What happens if there isn’t anyone available for the delivery?

Depending on your province of residence and the treatment being dispensed, your Felix packages may require a signature on delivery. If this cannot be collected where necessary, your package will be available at the closest post office for pick up. Usually, packages are available for up to 14 days after the first attempted delivery. If you don’t pick up your package within the allotted time, it will be returned to the sender, which may cause a further delay in your delivery.

When is my medication shipped?

Status updates for your prescription will appear in the Upcoming tab. You’ll be able to see if your prescription is being processed by our pharmacists or if it’s en route for delivery.

Refill schedule (drug dependent)

  • Monthly: refill is processed approx. every 20 to 23 days
  • Every 2 months: refill is processed approx. every 50 to 53 days
  • Every 3 months: refill is processed approx. every 76 to 84 days
Will I be able to receive my medication on time during the holidays?

Yes, the pharmacy will process your prescription to account for any expected delays due to the holiday season.

Is your packaging discreet?

Absolutely. All Felix shipments arrive in a nondescript blister package so you can have your treatment shipped wherever makes sense for you as long as there is someone there to sign for it.

How much does it cost to ship my treatment?

There is currently no cost to have your treatment shipped to you from our Felix Pharmacy network.

Do I have to be home to receive my package?

A signature upon delivery may be required.

How and when can I update my shipping address?

Your address can be updated from the Shipping tab of your account. Kindly note that any changes need to be made 48hr ahead of your refill date.

Pricing and Payment
How much is the online visit?

Felix charges a fee for the online visit. In most cases the fee is $40 but varies by treatment category. The visit fee includes a prescription valid for up to a year (depending on the condition) and on-going support from the healthcare practitioner or pharmacist.

How much will my treatment cost?

It depends. Treatment costs vary but will be in line with what you would pay at a pharmacy in person. You will see the estimated cost of your treatment before insurance, during the online visit but will only be billed for medication costs for your prescription once it is approved and sent to our pharmacy. Once approved, your treatment and payment will be processed within one to two days.

Keep in mind that you won’t necessarily need to pay the full price yourself. If you have insurance, Felix’s partner pharmacies will bill your insurer directly. You may also be eligible for financial support in your province.

How do I change my credit card information?

Go to Billing, and you will be able to update the credit card information on file.

How much does a checkup visit cost?

The cost of the checkup visit varies by category, but in many cases there is no charge, so long as you complete your checkup visit before your current prescription expires.

Will I be charged for the visit fee, even if a prescription is denied?

Yes, the visit fee is charged when you submit your visit and is generally refunded if the visit is denied by your healthcare practitioner.
Exceptions apply: Weight Loss visit fees are refunded only if you are deemed clinically ineligible. Visit fees for Diagnostic categories (Metabolic Health, STIs) and Menopause are non-refundable. For these complex health categories, the visit fee covers the practitioner's time to review your medical assessment, issuing a lab requisition, reviewing your lab results with you, and making a diagnosis if applicable.

Why can’t I see medication prices on the website?

While it is illegal in Canada to display market pricing for prescription medication, you will be able to see the estimated cost of medication during the online visit. The price shown is an estimation and will vary if the healthcare practitioner prescribes you a different medication, or if you have insurance or benefits coverage. All estimated prices shown during the online visit include the pharmacy fill fee based on the refill schedule of your choice.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major credit cards for any aspect of your treatment not covered by insurance or other financial support

Insurance
I forgot to upload my insurance information before my first fill was charged. What can I do now?

You will find the official receipt for your medication costs within your package from the pharmacy. This receipt can be used to submit a manual claim directly to your insurance/benefits provider. Future refills will be direct-billed directly to your insurance provider, once you have uploaded your insurance information from the Billing tab of your account.

I didn’t have insurance when I first got my prescription, but now I have it. What do I do?

Go to Billing where you can add or update your insurance information on file.

Am I covered by my insurance?

Medication coverage varies greatly between different insurance plans.

The good news is that if you are covered, Felix can bill your insurer directly, and then ship your medications right to your door at no additional cost to you. We recommend that you upload your private and/or provincial benefit card during the online visit so that our pharmacy partner can apply any coverage you are eligible for before shipping your meds.

Insurance coverage for medications through Felix doesn't include the cost of your visit.

Is the online visit covered by my insurance or provincial health plans?

A Felix online visit is considered asynchronous since it is conveniently completed through a secure chat bases system. Currently, asynchronous visits are not covered by insurance or provincial health plans so you will be charged a visit fee, depending on the category of treatment you are requesting.

Is birth control covered by OHIP in Ontario?

OHIP+ covers some birth control for eligible residents of Ontario who are under 25 years old and do not have private insurance. You can check if your birth control medication is covered here. Make sure to upload your Ontario health card during your online visit so our pharmacy partners can apply your coverage directly.

I uploaded my insurance information during my online visit but still see a cost for the medication in my profile.

The coverage you are eligible for will not be deducted until the pharmacy processes your refill, so the price you see in your profile is the estimated maximum medication cost before benefits. Once the pharmacy ships your meds, the actual cost will be displayed for the respective refill.

Is the medication covered by my insurance or provincial health plans?

Am I covered by my insurance?

Treatment coverage varies greatly between different insurance plans.

The good news is that if you are covered, Felix can bill your insurer directly, and then process your treatment plan at no additional cost to you. We recommend that you upload your private and/or provincial benefit card during the online visit so that our pharmacy partner can apply any coverage you are eligible for before processing your treatment plan.

Insurance coverage for treatment plans through Felix doesn't include the cost of your visit.

Prescriptions
How do I change my medication after it has been prescribed?

Changing medication does legally require a new prescription as the healthcare practitioner will need to both cancel the existing prescription as well as review a health assessment of yours in the context of this different drug.
Go to Treatments, click "View details" on your prescription, and use the "Change my treatment plan" feature to submit a free follow-up visit and request a medication change with your healthcare practitioner.

How do I apply for multiple treatments?

Once you’ve created your Felix account and set up your medical profile, you can complete an online visit to any of the treatment categories you are eligible for using that same account.

How long does a prescription last?

Prescriptions written by Felix healthcare practitioners will last up to 12 months from the date of issue. Generally, your Felix prescription will contain refills for the prescribed medication. However, the amount of medication and the number of refills prescribed will ultimately be decided by the practitioner who reviews your online visit.

What other medications will become available via Felix?

We are planning to offer prescriptions for a variety of other everyday ailments. If you want to know when they become available, sign up for our mailing list by creating an account.

What is the pharmacy fill fee?

Every pharmacy charges a dispensing fee for filling prescriptions. Think of it as a service fee for knowledge and service provided by the pharmacist. If you get your medication through Felix, our pharmacy is still required to charge a fill fee and that fee is included in the price of medication that we display. A $12.00 fill fee is charged for each drug, every time you get a refill.

I already have a prescription, can I transfer it to Felix?

At this time we are not accepting external patient transfers into the Felix Pharmacy network due to capacity restrictions. We hope to have the capacity to accept your transfer soon.

I don’t want to wait to receive the backordered drug I selected, what should I do?

If your visit is still pending, we recommend you reach out to the prescribing healthcare practitioner directly as they can recommend a similar drug that isn’t backordered. If you have already been approved for a prescription for a backordered drug, a new prescription would be required to change medication.  Please reach out to our Patient Support team through the chat bubble in the bottom right corner of your account or our Contact Us page and we’ll look into it.

Can I pick up my medication from my own pharmacy?

Absolutely. If you would prefer to pick up your medication from a community pharmacy of your choice instead of using free shipping through the Felix network, simply choose the “Pickup at external pharmacy” option on the checkout page of the online visit.

If you would like to transfer an existing prescription to your community pharmacy, please reach out to our Patient Support team through the chat bubble in the bottom right corner of your account or our Contact Us page, so we can provide the correct, pharmacy specific, transfer out instructions.

Note: We cannot guarantee the prices of pharmacies outside our network.

Our Healthcare Practitioners
How do I communicate with my Felix practitioner?

Your Felix practitioner will message you via secure instant message. You’ll receive an email when you have a new message and can respond to these from within your Felix account.

What does your medical team do?

Our medical team and board members help oversee each of our treatments to ensure our medical assessments are thorough, safe, personalized, and provide best-in-class care. Our pharmacists provide treatment support through medication counselling and education.

Who are the practitioners that will be reviewing my online visit?

They are all licensed, real Canadian healthcare practitioners! All online visits submitted via Felix are reviewed by them and they must be licensed in your province to prescribe you the medication. It is these healthcare practitioners, and not Felix, who determine whether or not to write you a prescription, as well as the appropriate dosage (where applicable).

Can I see the same Felix practitioner after my initial assessment?

You will have the ability to chat with your designated Felix practitioner for the entirety of your prescription length. When your prescription is nearing completion, we will email you to submit a checkup visit so one of our prescribers can renew your prescription.

Our matching system is based on availability, so we can’t guarantee you’ll be paired with the same healthcare practitioner at your renewal visit.

Can you refer me to a psychiatrist or psychologist?

Felix practitioners are unable to make referrals at this time. We suggest you speak with your family doctor or local walk-in clinic.

Privacy and Security
Is this legal?

Yes! In Canada, only a licensed healthcare practitioner can write a prescription, and only a registered pharmacist can fill that prescription. We are supported by leaders in the Canadian pharmacology and specialized medical fields. Felix adheres strictly to all the regulations set forth by all applicable Colleges of Pharmacists and Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons in which we operate.

Is this safe?

Absolutely. All prescriptions obtained via Felix are provided by licensed Canadian healthcare practitioners—the same as you would get at a hospital, doctor’s office, or clinic. These practitioners do not provide prescriptions unless they deem it medically safe and appropriate to write them based on your medical profile and assessment answers. Our assessments have been crafted by the practitioners on our medical team. Finally, all Felix Pharmacies are provincially accredited just like any retail pharmacy.

Is my information private and secure?

Yes, your security is paramount to Felix’s mission. Personal health information provided during your medical assessment is strictly and legally confidential between you and the Felix healthcare practitioner.

Beyond that, all your account information (including the medical assessment, credit card, and shipping information, etc.) is also stored safely and securely. Felix is compliant with all federal and provincial health privacy legislation. It is our duty to protect your data with comprehensive security infrastructure and stringent data policies to ensure it stays private and secure.

Read more on our Privacy Policy.

How is my privacy protected?

Your privacy is our top priority. All your data is 256 bit SSL/TLS encrypted, and we take significant steps to keep your data secure. You can read our Privacy Policy for more information.

Can I have my medical records with Felix shared with my primary care provider?

We are happy to facilitate a release of your medical records with Felix to your primary care provider. Please send a request message through the chat bubble in the bottom right corner of your account or our Contact Us page, and our clinical operations team will be happy to help.
