What is Desvenlafaxine?
Desvenlafaxine is an oral tablet prescribed as an antidepressant to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). It belongs to the drug class serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI), and is taken in doses ranging from 10 mg up to 100 mg per day. Desvenlafaxine is usually taken once a day at the same time every day. It may take several weeks to see symptoms improve.
How does Desvenlafaxine work?
Desvenlafaxine works by increasing the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. These neurotransmitters are naturally occurring substances which help maintain mental balance, and their levels may be unbalanced in those with depression. Desvenlafaxine prevents the serotonin and norepinephrine your brain creates from being reabsorbed back into the system too quickly.
