About Liraglutide
Liraglutide is a medication belonging to the Glucagon-like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) family of drugs.
Liraglutide prescriptions are used to help patients with chronic weight management, alongside improved lifestyle habits (i.e., healthy diet, regular exercise, etc.).
While liraglutide is the generic name for this medication, the brand name for liraglutide is Saxenda.
If you’d like to learn more about how liraglutide functions, you’re welcome to explore the product information for more information. We’ll also answer many of your burning questions on this page.
Liraglutide works for weight loss by activating your GLP-1 receptors through stimulating certain G-proteins within your body.
Your GLP-1 receptors help your body regulate both your appetite and how quickly you feel full, and managing these receptors can be an invaluable weight management tool.
To answer the ‘What does liraglutide do?’ question more simply: it helps you reduce your daily caloric intake by reducing the size and frequency of your meals, and often reduces ‘food noise’ and cravings. You can think of liraglutide as helping you to eat less, if that helps.

Liraglutide injections are taken once a day subcutaneously, which means under your skin. It’s very important not to inject liraglutide medications directly into veins and/or muscles.
The best places to inject your liraglutide dosages are the front of your waist (on your abdomen), the front of your thighs, and your upper arms. You should also rotate the areas where you’re injecting your liraglutide dosages to avoid developing irritation at the injection site or lumps in your skin.
Specific instructions on how to use the pre-filled injections will be included when your medication is dispensed, and you should always be sure to follow those instructions as closely as possible for effective results.
It’s important to remember that the side effects of liraglutide will vary from person-to-person. Some people may experience no side effects of liraglutide at all, or only those that appear in the short-term, because the side effects usually disappear as they adjust to the treatments.
However, when considering some common potential side effects, these include:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Vomiting
- Gastrointestinal issues (i.e., gastritis, dyspepsia, stomach discomfort, bloating, gas, etc.)
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Abdominal pain
There are other side effects that you should talk to your Health care practitioner about but some of which are:
- Gallstones
- Low blood sugar
- Increase in pancreatic enzymes (i.e. pancreatitis)
If you start to notice any of these potential side effects of liraglutide becoming severe or beginning to impact your quality of life, be sure to talk to your practitioner about it. If you’d like to learn more about these types of treatments, you can explore the product monograph for more information.
They may be able to adjust your prescription to reduce these liraglutide side effects, or suggest an alternative medication that may cause you less side effects.
There are a number of people who shouldn’t request an online liraglutide prescription in Canada, because it may have negative effects based on your existing medical conditions. You shouldn’t use liraglutide if you:
- Have a family history of medullary thyroid cancer
- Have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome (MEN 2)
- Are allergic to any of the active ingredients in liraglutide medications
- Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
- Are breastfeeding
In order to make sure that it is safe for you to take liraglutide, it is important for your healthcare practitioner to know about all your health conditions. Some health concerns that are especially important to discuss are:
- Have heart palpitations or irregular heart beat
- Have or at risk of gallstones
- Have or have had suicidal thoughtsor suicide attempt
- Have heart problems (eg. heart failure, heart attack, angina etc)
- Have diabetes
- Use insulin
- Have or have had pancreatitis
- Have ever had an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in liraglutide
- Have kidney, liver or stomach problems
- Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed
- Are already experiencing severe vomiting, diarrhea, and/or dehydration
Your practitioner will be able to ensure that if you’re going to use liraglutide treatments, you’re doing it in a safe, supervised way and avoiding as many liraglutide side effects as possible.
Most people that use online liraglutide prescriptions won’t experience any major side effects, other than the expected ones, which should lessen or disappear over time as your body adjusts to the liraglutide medications.
There are a number of people who shouldn’t use liraglutide, due to risks associated with other conditions that they already have. This is part of the reason why you can’t get a liraglutide prescription in Canada until you’ve been assessed by a licensed healthcare practitioner, like those at Felix.
You can take your online liraglutide prescription anytime of day or night once it arrives, but be sure to continue taking it around the same time of day as you continue with follow-up liraglutide injections.
Also, remember to rotate your injection sites between liraglutide dosages, so that you avoid irritation or lumps at the injection sites.
Liraglutide begins to work within your body in just a few hours after taking your first liraglutide dosage. However, it’s essential to understand that liraglutide is a long-term treatment.
It can take weeks or months for you to begin noticing substantial changes in your weight or body mass, and that’s completely normal.
Weight loss and weight management are things that shouldn’t happen too quickly, or it can actually be detrimental to other parts of your body (i.e., your muscles, your bones, etc.).
Liraglutide is effective for many patients, but we have to point out that the process of using liraglutide will look somewhat different from patient-to-patient.
Some people may notice changes in just a few weeks, while others may take months to start meeting smaller milestones. This is normal and to be expected.
Each person’s weight management journey is going to be somewhat unique, and it will be easier for some than others, because of things we can’t control like genetics and biology.
Online liraglutide prescriptions can be effective for many people, but you’ll need to work alongside your practitioner to find the right liraglutide dosage to meet your needs; as well as commit to other health lifestyle changes (i.e., diet, exercise), to get the best results.
Liraglutide, like other GLP-1 medications, functions by helping you to reduce your caloric intake.
It does in several ways, such as:
- Making you feel full faster
- Slowing digestion to make you feel full for longer
- Reducing food cravings (a.k.a. ‘food noise’)
Together, alongside an increased exercise regimen and improved/well-balanced diet, liraglutide helps patients with their weight management plans.

Is this legal?
Yes! In Canada, only a licensed healthcare practitioner can write a prescription, and only a registered pharmacist can fill that prescription. We are supported by leaders in the Canadian pharmacology and specialized medical fields. Felix adheres strictly to all the regulations set forth by all applicable Colleges of Pharmacists and Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons in which we operate.
Is this safe?
Absolutely. All prescriptions obtained via Felix are provided by licensed Canadian healthcare practitioners—the same as you would get at a hospital, doctor’s office, or clinic. These practitioners do not provide prescriptions unless they deem it medically safe and appropriate to write them based on your medical profile and assessment answers. Our assessments have been crafted by the practitioners on our medical team. Finally, all Felix Pharmacies are provincially accredited just like any retail pharmacy.
How do I change my credit card information?
Go to Billing, and you will be able to update the credit card information on file.
How much does a checkup visit cost?
The cost of the checkup visit varies by category, but in many cases there is no charge, so long as you complete your checkup visit before your current prescription expires.
How much is the online visit?
Felix charges a fee for the online visit. In most cases the fee is $40 but varies by treatment category. The visit fee includes a prescription valid for up to a year (depending on the condition) and on-going support from the healthcare practitioner or pharmacist.
How much will my treatment cost?
It depends. Treatment costs vary but will be in line with what you would pay at a pharmacy in person. You will see the estimated cost of your treatment before insurance, during the online visit but will only be billed for medication costs for your prescription once it is approved and sent to our pharmacy. Once approved, your treatment and payment will be processed within one to two days.
Keep in mind that you won’t necessarily need to pay the full price yourself. If you have insurance, Felix’s partner pharmacies will bill your insurer directly. You may also be eligible for financial support in your province.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards for any aspect of your treatment not covered by insurance or other financial support
Why can’t I see medication prices on the website?
While it is illegal in Canada to display market pricing for prescription medication, you will be able to see the estimated cost of medication during the online visit. The price shown is an estimation and will vary if the healthcare practitioner prescribes you a different medication, or if you have insurance or benefits coverage. All estimated prices shown during the online visit include the pharmacy fill fee based on the refill schedule of your choice.
Will I be charged for the visit fee, even if a prescription is denied?
Yes, the visit fee is charged when you submit your visit and is generally refunded if the visit is denied by your healthcare practitioner.
Exceptions apply: Weight Loss visit fees are refunded only if you are deemed clinically ineligible. Visit fees for Diagnostic categories (Metabolic Health, STIs) and Menopause are non-refundable. For these complex health categories, the visit fee covers the practitioner’s time to review your medical assessment, issuing a lab requisition, reviewing your lab results with you, and making a diagnosis if applicable.
Am I covered by my insurance?
Treatment coverage varies greatly between different insurance plans.
The good news is that if you are covered, Felix can bill your insurer directly, and then process your treatment plan at no additional cost to you. We recommend that you upload your private and/or provincial benefit card during the online visit so that our pharmacy partner can apply any coverage you are eligible for before processing your treatment plan.
Insurance coverage for treatment plans through Felix doesn’t include the cost of your visit.
I didn’t have insurance when I first got my prescription, but now I have it. What do I do?
Go to Billing where you can add or update your insurance information on file.
I forgot to upload my insurance information before my first fill was charged. What can I do now?
You will find the official receipt for your medication costs within your package from the pharmacy. This receipt can be used to submit a manual claim directly to your insurance/benefits provider. Future refills will be direct-billed directly to your insurance provider, once you have uploaded your insurance information from the Billing tab of your account.
I uploaded my insurance information during my online visit but still see a cost for the medication in my profile.
The coverage you are eligible for will not be deducted until the pharmacy processes your refill, so the price you see in your profile is the estimated maximum medication cost before benefits. Once the pharmacy ships your meds, the actual cost will be displayed for the respective refill.
Is birth control covered by OHIP in Ontario?
OHIP+ covers some birth control for eligible residents of Ontario who are under 25 years old and do not have private insurance. You can check if your birth control medication is covered here. Make sure to upload your Ontario health card during your online visit so our pharmacy partners can apply your coverage directly.
