Summer 2026, generic injectable semaglutide is coming to Canada – but what does that mean? How much does generic semaglutide cost in Canada? When is it hitting the market? Why is Canada introducing generic semaglutide treatments?
This page will answer everything you need to know, so you’re ready for these exciting new treatments when they become available this year. As new information becomes available, our team at Felix will keep this page updated.
What is generic semaglutide?
Generic semaglutide is simply the active ingredient in brand-named semaglutide medications. It is chemically identical to the brand-named versions and functions exactly the same way. Generic semaglutide is named after its active ingredient, rather than being given another title for sale.
There are many brand-named versions of this medication on the market, but in 2026, generic semaglutide (which is named after its main active ingredient, semaglutide) will become available for the first time in Canada.
Why is generic semaglutide coming to Canada?
The need for a cheaper, more accessible version of brand-named semaglutide medications has been in demand in Canada for some time, which is why these treatments are now becoming available for patients.
In addition to this, Canada will be the first country to see the patent on semaglutide expire, which is why Health Canada has the opportunity to authorize generic semaglutide for sale.
One of the biggest barriers that patients have experienced in accessing and staying on the brand-named versions of semaglutide is that it isn’t a cheap medication, ranging from $300-$550 per month of dosages, depending on the medication chosen, as well as which province you’re located in within Canada.
BE AWARE: At this time, the majority of private insurance companies don’t provide any type of coverage for generic semaglutide.
When will generic semaglutide be available in Canada?
The official date hasn’t been announced yet, but at this time, it appears to be coming as early as June 2026. This could change over the next few weeks, as the rollout of these new treatments begins across the country.
Stay tuned to Felix for more information in the coming weeks, as we will announce generic semaglutide’s availability as soon as it’s available through our pharmacy partners.
How much will generic semaglutide cost in Canada?
We don’t really know exact numbers yet, and it will be difficult to get an answer for this question until the medication is officially available for sale.
However, we have a useful waitlist that you can use to get a notification from the Felix team when generic semaglutide does become available for sale across Canada. Check out this table for more useful information on what we anticipate for the cost of generic semaglutide in Canada:

Who is manufacturing generic semaglutide for Canadians?
Dr Reddy’s Laboratories is going to be the first of the major manufacturers for generic semaglutide injections in Canada, but there could be others that also start manufacturing in the coming weeks.
The Canadian-based company Apotex was also recently approved for manufacturing generic semaglutide as of May 1, 2026. At this time, it’s believed the name for their treatments will simply be ‘Apotex semaglutide’.
Health Canada has seven other companies vying to be authorized for the sale of their generic submissions, which are still under review. We will continue to update this page as new companies are approved.
Novo Nordisk is developing ‘brand-named’ versions of generic semaglutide, in the hopes that it will continue to give them a competitive advantage in the market. Several other manufacturers will eventually provide generic semaglutide in Canada, but when these become available and how they will be marketed to the public remains to be seen.
Regulatory process for generic medications in Canada
The generic semaglutide regulatory process in Canada starts at Health Canada’s Health Products and Food Branch (HPFB). This organization requires manufacturers to file a report called an Abbreviated New Drug Submission (ANDS) in order to apply to make and distribute this medication in Canada.
It’s important to note that part of the reason generic medications are cheaper is that they’re identical to their brand-name counterparts; the research and development costs that went into getting the brand-name approved don’t need to be incurred again.
SIDE NOTE: It’s important to remember that even though those R&D costs don’t need to be paid again, manufacturers are still required to maintain the same level of quality, efficacy, and safety as the brand-name versions.
Potential impact on access and affordability
As we mentioned, one of the hopes that many patients and practitioners have with semaglutide’s cost in Canada is that the release of generic treatments will substantially cut back on the monthly cost to access these treatments.
In addition to this, it’s unclear whether insurance companies will begin adopting generic semaglutide in Canada as a covered treatment.
At Felix, we’re very hopeful that the upcoming release of generic semaglutide in Canada will improve both the accessibility and affordability of these treatments for our patients across the country.
Will there be brand-name generic semaglutide treatments?
Yes, believe it or not, there will actually be ‘brand name’ versions of generic semaglutide treatments, including Plosbrio, which has already been approved for Novo Nordisk to produce.
The rest of the generic versions of semaglutide in Canada will carry the naming convention of whoever developed it (i.e., Teva semaglutide, Apotex semaglutide, etc.).
Whether there will be differences in the cost of these generic semaglutide treatments in Canada remains to be seen, but Felix will keep you informed once these options are available for sale.
FAQs about generic semaglutide in Canada:
Why are generic versions of semaglutide being introduced?
Generic semaglutide is being introduced in Canada to improve both the accessibility and affordability of these types of treatments for patients across the country, who haven’t been able to use these treatments due to their cost or lack of insurance coverage.
How does generic semaglutide vary from its brand-named versions?
It varies in name only!
Literally, the only difference between generic and brand-name semaglutide is the way that they’re named. Apart from that, they are chemically identical and function the exact same way.
The only other difference is that some brand names come in different dosages, but even still, they contain the same active ingredient – semaglutide.
Can I get notified when generic semaglutide is available?
Yes, you absolutely can!
Felix has a waitlist set up, so that if you’d like to know when generic semaglutide is available in Canada, we’ll send you a notification.
This way, you can book a virtual semaglutide consultation with one of our practitioners to determine whether these types of treatments would make sense for you as part of your overall treatment plan.
Will generic semaglutide in Canada have the same potential side effects as their brand named versions?
Yes, they will. Because generic semaglutide is identical chemically to their brand-name alternatives, they will also carry the same potential side effects.
However, most people who use semaglutide treatments only experience mild side effects, and they may lessen or disappear as your body adjusts to the treatments over time.
Is generic semaglutide in Canada the same as compound semaglutide?
No, they are not.
Generic semaglutide is produced by a manufacturer the same way that brand-name treatments are. Compound semaglutide is actually mixed directly at a pharmacy by a pharmacist or licensed technician, usually because the manufactured versions won’t work for a patient.
This could be due to an allergy or intolerance to one of the inactive ingredients, but it’s determined on a patient-by-patient basis.
SIDE NOTE: It’s important to note here that Felix does not offer compound semaglutide.
Will generic semaglutide be available as a pill?
No, not at this time.
During this launch of generic semaglutide, the only versions that are being made available in Canada are semaglutide injections, similar to the brand-name treatments that are currently in circulation.
Be sure to check back in the future, because if this changes, Felix will be sure to update this page with any relevant information as it becomes available.
Is generic semaglutide as safe to use and effective as brand-name semaglutide?
Yes, it is.
In order to be authorized for sale by Health Canada, generic semaglutide must be chemically identical to its brand-name equivalents.
This means that generic semaglutide is exactly as safe and effective to use as any of the brand-name versions that are currently being used in Canada.
Why is Canada the first country to get generic semaglutide?
The simple answer to why Canadians get to enjoy generic semaglutide injections before other countries is that the patent for semaglutide expired in Canada first.
Until the patent on a brand-named medication expires, that drug is protected from being offered as a generic version, usually with the price locked in at a higher rate.
Now that the patent is expiring in Canada, generic semaglutide is going to become available, just like it will presumably in other countries, as the patent expires in those regions as well.
How can I ensure the generic semaglutide I get online isn’t ‘fauxzempic’?
Health Canada has warned that, as the release of generic semaglutide is launched across the Canadian healthcare market, there will likely be some ‘fauxzempic’ medications that are NOT regulated by Health Canada. These fake versions of the approved ones haven’t been held to the same safety, quality, and efficacy standards as approved versions.
The only way to ensure that you’re getting real generic semaglutide is by always purchasing it from authorized pharmacies that are licensed to provide generic semaglutide that has been authorized for sale by Health Canada.
Felix and our pharmacy partners are approved to provide generic semaglutide, once it becomes available in Canada. So, if you’d like our team to notify you once these treatments are available for purchase, we’d invite you to join our helpful waitlist.
