What is Elavil?
Elavil is a tricyclic antidepressant with sedative effects which is also known by its generic name, amitriptyline. It is prescribed for the treatment of depression, but also may be prescribed off-label for neuropathic chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and migraines. Elavil elevates and regulates the levels of certain neurotransmitters (specifically norepinephrine and dopamine) that are responsible for mood and pain processing.

It's believed to increase the concentration of certain chemicals in the brain, which can help with the symptoms of depression.
