Moms are many things: problem-solvers, peacekeepers, cheerleaders, and even mindreaders (somehow). From early wakeups to late-night cleanups, their calendars are full, and their to-do lists are never-ending. They’re the keeper of all the dates and details, and have probably scheduled more appointments than they’ve had solo bathroom breaks. Whether managing the household from the office, the grocery store, the school drop-off lane, or all three in one day, moms do it all.
In honour of Mother’s Day, we want to recognize the mental load so many moms carry when it comes to keeping everyone (and everything!) together—and why they deserve an easier way to prioritize their care, too.
The Chief Medical Officers of the family
The role of “mom” is constant, demanding, and filled with a lot of responsibilities… and there’s one big one that often goes unrecognized: taking care of everyone else’s health. Moms are most families’ health heroes—the official, unofficial Chief Medical Officers of the household. But, with that title comes the inevitable reality that their health can sometimes get kicked to the bottom of the list.
“As a mom of two, I understand firsthand that moving your needs to the bottom of the ever-growing to-do list becomes second nature. Especially in the early years of parenthood, it’s exceptionally difficult to find time to brush your own teeth, let alone get yourself to a walk-in clinic.” - Emma Stern, Felix Founder & COO
Even research shows that women, especially mothers, are typically the ones shouldering the responsibility for their family's health decisions. An estimated 78 percent of women put off their own health because they were so busy caring for others' healthcare needs in the home, and half of working mothers report being the ones to miss work to care for sick children in the event they have to stay home from school1.
Why access to virtual care matters
For many women and mothers whose time and energy are already stretched thin, traditional in-person healthcare can be difficult to navigate. Barriers like time-consuming commutes, rigid appointment schedules, and long wait times can make it feel nearly impossible to carve out time for their own wellbeing amidst the demands of everyday life.
Virtual care helps remove some of these challenges by making healthcare more flexible and accessible. Being able to connect with a practitioner, receive a treatment plan, and get it delivered — all while on the go — can often have a huge impact on someone’s ability to follow through with their own care. In fact, 45 percent of women report that virtual care options offer more convenient appointments that suit their lifestyle, underscoring the importance of modern healthcare options that allow moms to get the support they need on their terms, without giving up more of their already-scarce time.
Made by moms, for moms
At Felix, our mission has always been to make everyday healthcare more accessible for Canadians, including all the moms. With many of the women behind Felix being mothers themselves, our platform and approach to care are grounded in real-life needs and designed with lived experience in mind.
“While becoming a mother has made my life much, much cuter, it’s also made it more complex, and I’ve grown to understand how hard it can be to prioritize your own wellbeing. That’s why I’m so passionate about offering Canadian moms a way to take care of their health safely and effectively from their phones in those precious minutes stolen during naps or after bedtime. It can be such a game-changer!” - Emma Stern, Felix Founder & COO
With flexible, chat-based visits that work around hectic schedules, personalized care across a range of women’s health concerns, and fast and free delivery that saves (another) trip to the pharmacy, Felix was built to meet moms where they are. When time for yourself is hard to come by, your care shouldn't be complicated. By removing the stress of juggling appointments, commuting, or navigating stigma, we hope to help every mom feel like their health is easier to manage.
