What is Ketotifen used for?

Ketotifen is a histamine H1 receptor blocker and mast cell stabilizer which is prescribed for the treatment of mild atopic asthma and allergic conjunctivitis. It comes in an oral liquid formula as well as an ophthalmic solution for use in the eyes. The oral formula treats mild atopic asthma by preventing or decreasing wheezing and troubled breathing. The ophthalmic solution treats allergic conjunctivitis by temporarily preventing itchy eyes.

How does Ketotifen work?

Ketotifen works by inhibiting the effects of inflammatory mediators to reduce the frequency, duration, and severity of the symptoms of mild atopic asthma. As an antihistamine, Ketotifen improves breathing by decreasing swelling in the lungs and airways. It is not a quick relief medicine, but improvement should be seen after about two to three months of regular use.
